Fiona Blackwood - Fiona Blackwood - 08-08-2026 9 August 1923
Elder & Ash Fiona looked over at her mum who had stopped a couple shops back to feed baby Teddy. Her father squeezed her hand when they stopped outside Elder & Ash. She looked up at him and smiled, nervously this time. She’d seen magic many times, and the idea of learning to weald it herself with her very own wand was fascinating, but she was nervous. “What if none of the wands work for me?” she had asked her mother earlier. Her mum’s response was to laugh and tell her that was nonsense. But what if…? Fiona nodded at her father before he opened the door for her, and let her wander inside alone. Her blue eyes took in the shelves of wand boxes on every side of her, her mouth dropping slightly as she waited for the lady with the red hair to help her. And you brought me a daughter! OH how I love daughters!! Welcome to Elder and Ash, I am Bernadette…Hmm… Or Bernie or Miss Hawthorn or Witchy McWitchface,” she titters with laughter, high and squeaky. “Don’t you fret, I will answer to just about anything… Except Clyde.” She shakes her head emphatically. “HE is a bowtruckle and can be quite persnickety, so watch your eyeballs, he likes to poke.” She nods at the young student, as if what she said was the most important piece of knowledge to take away from this conversation. “Can I assume you are here to find your wand? Yes!? Of course! Good Good.” Not waiting for a response, Bernie comes around the counter and begins measuring the little girl who just entered her shop. Lifting this arm and that, measuring each individual finger, kneeling and quickly measuring their feet, then popping back up to look deeply, and awkwardly into their eyes. “Fascinating. Did you know a quarter of the bones in your body are in your hand? No?! I didn't think so. OK! Let’s find you a wand. Pop Pop!” Bernie ran around the shop, spitting out random nonsense facts that most people really didn’t need to know. “Did you know that your left lung is slightly smaller than your right? Did ya? Nope. Why? To make room for your heart? Awwww, so sweet.” “Ok, let's try this one on for size.” Coming down from a ladder with multiple boxes haphazardly clutched in her arms. One attempts to jump, jump ship, but she manages to keep them all balanced. Handing the wand over to the student, Bernie steps back a touch so that she isn’t in the line of fire.. It was rare to find a match with the first box, but it could be done. “Go on then,” she said, waving her hands about. “Give it a flick.” I’m trying something a little different, so you have more say in the making of your wand. RE: Fiona Blackwood - Fiona Blackwood - 09-06-2026 Fiona looked at the wand Bernie handed her with great seriousness. Despite the wandmaker being a whirlwind, and that settling her nerves, she was confident that she would not embarrass herself. She was eleven and composed and she had lived in the school for three years. She knew what magic looked like and she was absolutely prepared for this moment. The moment when the first wand she tried was the one, proving to both of her parents that she was one to be proud of. Fiona gave it a flick. And then everything she’d hoped for died. A sound like a hiccup was emitted from the wand, and then there was an explosion of glitter. She loved glitter, had gallons of it at home, but this was not a good amount of glitter. This was the glitter that got everywhere immediately and in all directions. It coated everything nearby: wandboxes, the counter, her father’s very nice coat, and, most importantly, her hair. She stood very still. The glitter continued to fall, catching the light in a way that was both beautiful and embarrassing at the same time. In any other circumstance, Fiona would have danced in the falling glitter. “That,” she said in a very small and very controlled voice, “was not supposed to happen.” Fiona looked up at her father. He hated glitter. He had hers under lock and key back at the townhouse. She could only use it when supervised. She could see glitter in his eyebrow. “I’d like to try another one, please,” she said and very carefully set the first wand down on the counter. She had no clue what kind it was, but it was clearly not the kind of her. I’m picking Willow wood, Bowtruckle core! Perhaps on the second try it’s the right one. RE: Fiona Blackwood - Bernadette Hawthorn - 09-07-2026 “OH FOR THE LOVE OF CHERRY BLOSSOMS! That was NOT the one.” Glitter was still falling. Poor Mr Blackwood was completely covered, he sighed with resignation. As if glitter in his nose hairs was a common occurrence. Poor chap. Snatching the wand out of her hand, Bernie packaged the wand up gingerly, folding the gauze ribbon over the wand as if it were a sleeping baby. The box was carefully placed on the back counter under a sign that read “NOPE!” Those would be cleaned and checked for damage before returning to the shelf. With a quick flick of her wand, the glitter disappeared… well, most of it. Glitter never truly disappeared. And Magical glitter had an annoying habit of sticking around for years. Yep, Professor Blackwood would likely be sneezing it for some time to come. “Ok, let me think, let me think. Hmm..” Turning abruptly, Bernie went to stare at the poor dear in her shop. Arms crossed, fingers tapping thoughtfully on her chin. After a couple rotations around the student, she stopped and closed one eye… Then the other. “Did you know there are no muscles in your fingers? No? Shocking! Well… you do now. Ok, I think I have an option.” Skipping up a ladder and over a short walkway Bernie grabbed without even looking and popped down the ladder, coming to stop behind the counter. “Ok, let's see if this one causes less destruction! One can only hope. Umm… Clyde…. Maybe you should wait in the back…” Clyde wasn’t fond of the bowtruckle core wands. Not that it hurt the creatures, they molted the bark yearly, but she didn’t want to tempt the little creature to start poking eyes. She tucked the little guy in the back, just to be safe. ”Ok. Lets do this!” Willow Wood with a Bowtruckle bark core. 11 ¾ in, swishy Willow Willow chooses those who have the greatest distance yet to travel. RE: Fiona Blackwood - Fiona Blackwood - 09-07-2026 Fiona looked up at her father, seeing the resigned look on his face. She frowned. She wanted to make him proud and having this kind of magical reaction to a wand was concerning. Surely no one found the right wand on the first flick. Right? She looked at the wand that the wandmaker was holding out to her now. She was not sure if she should take it. What if even worse happened? Maybe the whole store would explode and then her mum and dad would drop her off at the orphanage. Her fingers wrapped around the wand when she finally accepted it, and she looked from the wandmaker with the red hair and her father, then back at the wand. What was going to happen? Nothing felt weird. But nothing had felt weird with the last one either. She took a breath and gave the wand a flick. The warm light came slowly, not all at once. It spread from the tip of her wand like sunlight coming through a gap in the curtains. Gentle, steady, and very quiet. It pooled on the counter and climbed the walls of the shop, making the whole place feel, momentarily, like a Sunday morning. Fiona just stared at it. She’d expected something dramatic, something on part with the glitter explosion but less damaging. Something that would make her father straighten up and the wandmaker exclaim and anyone watching think there she is. This was not that. This was soft and warm and a little bit like being tucked in, which she would never say out loud to anyone. Her hand had stopped shaking, she realized. She hadn’t known it was shaking until it wasn’t. “Oh,” she said softly, almost at a whisper. “That is mine, isn’t it.” It wasn’t a question. She knew. RE: Fiona Blackwood - Bernadette Hawthorn - 09-11-2026 “OH GOOD FUN! We have a winner!” Bernie sings, dancing a jig behind the counter. “That is fantastic! And my shop is a bit more sparkly. Who doesn't love a bit of sparkle? Thanks for that.” Bernie's eyes went to Professor Blackwood. She got the distinct impression that he, in fact, didn't like a bit of sparkle. Flitting around behind the counter, mumbling to herself while pulling a few things out here and there. “Ok, ARE YOU LISTENING?!” Green eyes wide, red hair fluffed out with her exertion. “I hope you are…” She said slowly, looking at the student carefully. “Here are the things you will need. FIRST!” She said with a flourish, “is your wand holster. You may strap it to your leg, or arm, sew it into clothing or use a pocket on the inside of your robes. DO NOT EVER! Put it in your back pocket. No No No. That's how little Tommy blew off a butt cheek. Yes he did. Big tadoo.” She trailed off, shaking her head at the poor unfortunate state of little Tommy. “NEXT! Here is a jar of polish and a rag. Keep. Your. Wand. CLEAN! Do not make me say it again. It is important. And don’t even get me started on using it to pick your nose or itch your ear.” Wide green eyes met those of the student, her hands went up over her head, miming an explosion, “Boom!” “AND THIRD! Wait… What's the third thing… umm, OH YES! Silly me. Have fun dear. Be good at Hogwarts, eat your veggies and stay away from the East Wing, I hear it’s haunted.” She gave them a knowing smile and walked away. As her back turned to the student, a small green leggy creature could be seen hanging on to her hat. Little Clyde, watching over his favorite human. RE: Fiona Blackwood - Fiona Blackwood - 09-12-2026 “OH GOOD FUN! We have a winner! That is fantastic! And my shop is a bit more sparkly. Who doesn't love a bit of sparkle? Thanks for that.” While the wandmaker spoke, Fiona couldn’t keep her eyes off the wand she was holding. The wood was dark, and twisty, and it felt good in her hand. And, most importantly, it was hers. She knew at that moment that she would do great things with that wand. She didn’t know what, but she’d figure it out. When she looked up, the wandmaker was beginning to put things on the counter for her. She kept her eyes wide and focused while the woman spoke, intent on not messing up her wand. She picked up the holster. Leg, arm, clothes, or robes. But not in back pockets because now there was someone out there who had blown off a whole butt cheek. She couldn’t help but to laugh at the thought, and wondered if she’d ever met a Tommy at Hogwarts who must have been quite lopsided when he sat down. She set the holster down and looked at the jar of wand polish and rag. A wide-eyed look crossed her face at the gross idea of picking her nose with her wand. She could see, maybe, her baby cousin Cai doing something like that ‘cause he was such a baby compared to her. The woman went on to tell her to have fun, but to beware of the East Wing. She then looked up at her father, who had his hand on her shoulder. She could see glitter still all over him, which made her giggle. He picked up the bag that the wandmaker put the things in, and she left the shop, her hand still gently yet securely holding her wand. |
