Round Five Results
A hand reaches for gold and comes up empty, and a door closes on the game's very last chance.
Maevie’s Reach
Maevie: 18 (fail) / Ruth: 14 (fail) / Tulip: 10 (success)
For one heartbeat, the Snitch is close enough to touch. Maevie’s fingers close around empty air instead, the Snitch slipping past by no more than an inch as her reach comes up just short. Ruth’s Bludger never even factors in, her hit going wide before it’s anywhere near Maevie, and Tulip’s watchful positioning ends up unneeded; whatever cost Maevie the catch, it wasn’t a Beater’s doing.
Morgan’s Read
Morgan: 7 (success)
Morgan stops chasing Brooks and commits instead, swinging wide and diving into the lane between Lovelace and the hoops. It works. Lovelace, boxed into a worse angle than she wants, has no clean shot left to take; Morgan’s read forces her hand, and for now, the goal stays shut.
Elsewhere on the Pitch
Serik stays close to Lovelace’s side even as Morgan’s block closes off her clean view of the hoops, ready to catch the ball if she lets go. Dawn hovers near the action, ready to scoop up the Quaffle the moment it comes loose, but it never does. Edwin keeps searching the sky, still without a glimpse of the Snitch even as Maevie’s chase ends in nothing. Conor stays close to Lovelace as well, watching Morgan’s block land and knowing there’s no clean angle left to offer her. Elowen, still nursing last round’s bruises, holds her ground at the hoops with nothing left to defend.
The Final Whistle
Neither side manages to put it away in that final round, and for a long while afterward it stays that way: both teams trading chances back and forth, the Quaffle changing hands more times than anyone could count, Beaters running themselves ragged, Chasers finding lanes only to lose them again just as fast. Late in that stretch, the Quaffle finds its way to Brooks. He doesn’t waste the opportunity. The Quaffle sails through the hoop, and the Basilisks take it, 10-0!
OOC:
Since the game’s five tracked rounds ended in a stalemate (no goals and no Snitch), the rest of the match was resolved with a few quick dice rolls to decide a winner rather than dragging things out further. Which team won (Basilisks), how (a Chaser goal), and who scored it (Brooks, off an odd/even roll against Lovelace). Thanks so much to everyone who played. This was such a fun first match!
I will be modifying the guides with appropriate additions from how this went before the second one, which is scheduled to start OOC Tuesday, 27 October.
If you have not signed up for Quid, and would like to participate, it’s not too late! Sign up for Match 2!
