Somewhere, somehow, Rae doubted Evander did very much protecting of anyone. It wasn't that the toddler lacked bravery. On the contrary, he had it in spades. Had too much of it. Would likely die from it some day.
But protector he was not.
The little boy was chaos incarnate and likely was the reason Adira wasn't still standing where they'd left her. Evander Harrison was the danger, stupid and lovable as he was. As the pair got older, Rae would have to teach Adi how to see idiocy and give it a wide berth, lest the boy take her down with him. With Benji for a brother spewing nonsense about boys protecting, that poor girl was gonna be in for a long, rough time.
"What do you think, pretty? Nap time for these two?"
"Straight to bed," Rae confirmed with a firm nod and a LOOK cast toward Evander to let him know how incredibly non-negotiable any of this was. "I think we could all use a little nap." She'd gotten hardly any sleep the night before, and the Laurences weren't in the habit of indulging girls with the belief that they could sleep until noon. Something about it being unbecoming and denoting laziness. Somehow, afternoon naps were less offensive, considered almost a sign of luxury to have that sort of time.
Rae didn't care about all that; she just wanted to curl up with her boyfriend whose kisses told her he had other plans and let the afternoon pass her by.
If she ignored Benji's advances long enough, he might even fall asleep with her, though she doubted the rule of delicate afternoon naps applied to boys.
It would be his civic duty then.
As her betrothed, she required him to be a good host, to keep her company and...ugh, "protect her" from the invisible predators that roamed the grounds of Arundel Castle. Very important work, very necessary. Deep inside her gut, she figured the hardest part wouldn't be getting the adults to ignore his repose but getting Benji to agree to the nap at all. More likely, he would prove as difficult as Evander, and she would have to do a whole lot of insisting.
Rae's free hand linked with Benji's, her fingers lacing themselves through his.
"A bath and a nap, for all of us. Come on."
They were back on track with this babysitting thing, and if the babies could keep their mouths shut, there would be a lot of praise waiting for her on the other side of this rainbow.
