Personality & History

Personality:
Eve (always Eve, Evie is reserved for family and Evelyn makes her feel like she should be much more grown up than she actually is) would typically be described as sweet and tender-hearted despite not being entirely accurate to her personality and does not take the nuances of her nature into account. Yes, Eve is sweet but it would often be used as a shield for her thoughts, never truly allowing other into her orbit or allowing them to know the true Eve who made situational comments to comfort her unease in social situations.

Eve has been somewhat dissatisfied with life — she’s quite contradictory in the sense that she wants nothing more than to escape the life she is living but also chose not to leave the life of luxury she was provided by her parents and considers it a small price to pay to do as they tell her, including to diminish her dreams of working in dragonology and do something much more practical such as healing. It’s not so much a passion but it is a secure future in a profession she would be good at and has the grades for, a future in which her parents could be proud and not have an air of disdain when they recite her name as one of their lifelong disappointments.

While Eve presents herself as put together, she’s probably got a bad case of anxiety and wants to run and hide and never be found, she prefers books to the company of others because people are unpredictable and books are not, they have facts in them and don’t navigate life with feelings.

History:
To be born into the Moon family had expectations no child can even hope to live up to, a renowned pureblood family in Korea, moving to England in the late 1800’s, to be born the eldest child of the middle son had expectations beyond achievable. Evelyn was wanted by her parents, her father a pureblood who had moved from Korea at the age of three and a mother whose muggle background had not stopped her from being anything but exceptional in every way. Hanhee was always an attentive mother, putting her all into raising her three children, giving them an education which most would envy, but Eve’s siblings were recklessness and unruly in their behaviour, it lead to Eve as the easily overlooked and put to the side child even if it the intent was not malicious. An overachiever who yearned for the attention her siblings were gifted behaving the same way had led to scoldings and assurances that Eve was well behaved and loved by them, that behaving well helped them and made a rounded adult. Vying for the position as their favourite child wasn’t easy and never be gifted to Eve, she was too flighty for their tastes.

Eve would never be their favourite. Never reaching the position she craved desperately. Despite knowing this fact, she had still tried and failed repeatedly. Taking different approaches but the outcome was always tragically the same. Her interests rarely aligned with that of her parents despite loving them dearly, they were completely different people who she found mostly boring to be around as a child. As an adult she understood, reading books brought solace for her mother, golfing brought solace for her father and most importantly baking brought solace for her. She would never be caught at a driving range; it was far too gauche for her tastes.

Age eleven came surprisingly quickly, one moment Eve was a child engaging in fun activities and having no responsibility then she was at Hogwarts, so far from home though Scotland wasn’t much different than Durham (she would complain about the temperate often). The cold seeped into her bones easier and homesickness was felt often despite her enjoyment of school. She missed her parents and siblings, it was unfair that their parents left such a gap between the two, at age seventeen, in her sixth year at Hogwarts, the middle child of her siblings was entering their first year. It was strange, having a first-year trail after her and watching them gain more independence the longer they were there. The sorting hat chose Slytherin, a choice which Eve was unsure about, her nature did not suit the house, but her traits certainly did.

As quickly as she started Hogwarts, it felt like the seven years had taken place in the span of moments, a blur of friendships and talks of the future had suddenly become very real, very fast. All subjects had a grade of O, anything less would have been horrifying to a girl like Eve, who took academic study seriously and wanted nothing more than to succeed and set herself up for a good future. Yet she did not know what she was doing with her promising future. The desk job was meant to last a summer maximum, the ministry had plenty of jobs and filing paperwork was not the worst thing to do, a summer turned into two and two turned into three. Applying to St Mungo’s was daunting, yet getting accepted onto the program was something she was not expecting but was going to give her all.

Twenty-one was the perfect age for her to do something new, in fact, she was very excited to do so.

Prompt Response:
Evelyn had found herself beautiful enough without artificial enhancements, yet she somehow found herself in Madam Primpernelle’s Beautifying Potions, staring at the racks of products in both distaste and utter bewilderment. Anti-aging potions were seemingly redundant for her young youthful appearance with barely a wrinkle blemishing her skin — she would argue that twenty-one-year-olds shouldn’t be sold such a ridiculous product, but the saleswoman had been pushy. Pushy enough for Evelyn to automatically place the product back on the self and shudder.

Skin softening elixirs were the next item she observed, the number of mirrors in the establishment was unsightly, and Evelyn was convinced they were charmed with a false perception of those wondering around the shop. She had never noticed the bags under her eyes be so prominent, the dark blue hue turning purple at the outer corners were probably fueled by her love of late nights and caffeine filled mornings. Though with her new job she doubted that the bags under her eyes would be the least of her worries, at least her prior desk job at the ministry accounted for her insomnia, the medical field required precision and an awake brain, a person who wasn’t on autopilot. Though beauty shopping rarely required anything other than shade selection and dirty looks as a sales assistant tried to pounce.

Eve looked over the glasses perched on her nose as she came across the acne corrector, her cheeks a rosy colour with bumps that were irritated and cratered the makeup she wore, an imperfection that she so desperately wanted to correct. Eve thought she looked like a child as she took in her reflection, a child playing in an adult world which she did not understand nor belong. Her fingers gently grasped the pale purple bottle as she slowly inched towards the cashier desk.

“Hanhee Cha said I was okay to pick them up.” The statement came out like more of a question, at least her mum’s occupation had perks, such as free beauty products when she was desperate and couldn’t wait for them to brew. “They’re prepaid; you should have a note on there for Evelyn Moon.”

The smile the cashier wore was condescending and her refusal to let Eve leave with the item was day ruining — maybe she should have just waited a few hours for Hanhee to finish her shift.

“Look I’m not playing games, you can’t withhold an item my mum has paid for, I don’t know why you’re being so… awkward. For merlin’s sake it’s less than five gallons.” Frustration was seeping into Eve as she glanced at the corrector and to the woman, her hand moving to take the item and leave.

The word thief echoed throughout the room as the cashier shot the accusation at her, Eve’s body had tensed, though she continued walking, how could one steal an item which had already been paid for and was rightfully hers? It had caused stares, the eyes on her made her want to curl into herself and apparate to someplace safe, one with less eyes and less judgement.

Eve’s pace never faltered as she exited the building, her eyes rolling, the vial which had caused her distress and embarrassment tucked into her pocket, hours later she had animatedly recounted the tale to her mother at the kitchen table.

“The place needs better staff, she didn’t even read the note, mother, she shamed me — she shamed our family! How dare she accuse me of stealing, I may have acted immaturely by leaving but I would do nothing to embarrass this family.” The words were earnest, the tears welling in her eyes as her Hanhee took her in her arms, the ordeal had made her shrink into herself once more.

Yet the smirk on her lips when she entered the shop a week later and saw a different cashier told a different story.
